Although the Montessori ‘practical life work’ approach has its place in child development – and indeed in our own centres, as outlined above – we also embrace the High/Scope emphasis on creative exploration, and encourage pretend play.
Our scheduling of the day is also indebted to the High/Scope approach of segmenting different kinds of interactions throughout the day – a time for small groups, a time for large group activities, a time for independent exploration, etc.
We share the High/Scope concept of predictability – consistently scheduling activities so that children know what will happen next, giving them more confidence, comfort and sense of control. This approach is particularly important in our unique After School Clubs.
We listen to your child. When your child speaks, we respond with open-ended questions that encourage thoughtful replies. We never, ever ‘humour’ your child. Instead of saying, ‘Isn’t that pretty?’ we say something like, ‘What do you like best about that?’
